Seruwe School Book Project

In May / June 2021 The ZimHoustonians community raised over 1000 $ and bought books for Seruwe Primary School.

It’s catchment area is the commercial and resettlement farms in the small town of Selous. Over the past 5 years, it’s Grade 7 examinations pass rate has been below 40 %, with last year’s being 9%. It faces serious challenges in terms of teaching resources.

The breakdown of students at Seruwe:

Grade 1   102

Grade 2    85

Grade 3  139

Grade 4    79

Grade 5    92

Grade 6    81

Grade 7    92

Each grade has two classes except for Grade 3 which has 3.

We concentrated  on the 3 upper grades, and managed to buy buy 5 sets of needed texts per grade.

We worked closely with Tember Banda, the Past President of the Rotary Club of Harare Central. _*Tember Banda has been involved in the shipment of donated books from Book Aid International in the United Kingdom for the past 13 years. He has been involved with another rural library in Domboshava for the past 3 years, built with funds from a small family trust in California. He and his team will purchase the books in Zimbabwe and arrange for handover to the school.

Conclusion/Note that many school children in poor and underserved communities in rural areas in Zimbabwe lack reading books. Lack of reading books results in reduced understanding of language, literacy skills, and learning skills. Conversely, reading increases literacy skills and comprehension which is an advantage in many aspects of the journey out of poverty and to be successful in the professional world. Please help us to help Seruwe school. No contribution is too small or too big. The more money we raise, the more students we can help
