Crisis Intervention – Cyclone Idai – 2019

In March 2019, the eastern part of Southern Africa was hit by Cyclone Idai resulting in lots of people losing their lives and massive damage to property and infrastructure. Bridges, roads and homes had been destroyed in the storm making the area inaccessible to rescuers, according to Zimbabwe’s news reporter from the Herald. ZimHoustonians organization raised funds to assist with the relief efforts to assist those affected by Cyclone Idai in the Manicaland province and Chipinge province of Zimbabwe. These areas were the most affected. Funds raised by ZimHA were specifically channelled to help students at VImba school. The school had become isolated as a results of the damage to the roads and access to it was difficult. Sadly, some students lost their lives. By march 17, 2019, the death toll had reached 70 and was expected to rise.
